Zip Moving & Storage recommends emptying your drawers prior to your move. Emptying your drawers during the packing process is beneficial for many reasons:

  1. The furniture will be lighter and easier to move
  2. Items are less likely to be damaged
  3. Furniture is less likely to be broken
  4. Drawers will move less during transport – moving drawers can be extremely hazardous to other furniture and the moving team

Some furniture is simply not strong enough to withstand moving while filled with belongings. Keeping items inside drawers can damage the furniture and be hazardous to the movers. Transfer your belongings from drawers to suitable moving boxes to make the furniture easier for the movers to safely pick up and load onto the trucks.

Moreover, if filled with belongings, drawers may accidentally open during transport. Fragile and small items kept inside of drawers can be easily lost or damaged during the moving process. Pack delicate items separately in a well-padded box and label with a “FRAGILE” sticker.

HOW DO I KEEP MY EMPTIED DRESSER DRAWERS FROM FALLING OUT WHILE MOVING?

Once the drawers are empty, use paper padding or moving blankets to prevent drawers from sliding out. Secure the drawers before moving the furniture by adhering the paper padding or blankets with tape or plastic wrap.

How to keep drawers from falling out when moving

To prevent drawers from falling out when moving, follow these steps:

  • Remove contents: Empty the drawers and remove any items inside to reduce weight and prevent damage.

  • Lock or secure drawers: Check if your furniture has built-in locking mechanisms or use straps or tape to secure the drawers in place.

  • Add padding: Place soft padding or moving blankets in and around the drawers to cushion and secure their contents.

  • Use plastic wrap: Securely wrap the entire piece of furniture, including the drawers, with plastic wrap to keep them in place.

  • Label and transport carefully: Clearly label the piece as ‘Fragile’ and transport it with care to minimize jostling and impacts.

WHAT FURNITURE SHOULD BE EMPTY BEFORE MOVING?

There are many different types of furniture that contain drawers. Bedroom dressers are the most common pieces of furniture with drawers, but be sure to also empty the drawers of:

  • Armoires
  • Writing desks
  • Nightstands
  • Cabinets
  • Coffee tables

DO PACKERS AND MOVERS PACK EVERYTHING?

Zip Moving & Storage movers strongly recommend that all drawers be emptied, not only because of the weight of the furniture but because it will be much more practical to carry the item up and down stairs and through tight passages.

The possibility of delicate items being broken during the loading and moving phase is greatly reduced if the drawers are empty.
